| The Kennedy Center will present Bowen McCauley Dance: Le Sacre du Printemps & More, March 1 & 2 in the Terrace Theater. The company will perform a diverse program including Eric Hampton's Beethoven's Bits and Lucy Bowen McCauley's ReSuitened. The choreography for ReSuitened is set to a new arrangement of Bach suites which NSO cellist Yvonne Caruthers will perform. The program also includes McCauley's Ozone, which was inspired by Rita Dove's poem - with live music by composer Larry Alan Smith. Ms. Dove will recite her poem as part of the performance. A highlight of the program will be the world premiere performance of McCauley's Le Sacre du Printemps--a quatre mains (The Rite of Spring), which celebrates the 100th anniversary of Stravinsky's 1913 work. The ensemble work will be accompanied by a live performance by Fabio and Gisele Witkowski of the four-hand piano version of the score.
The Kennedy Center will present Keigwin + Company performing a program that includes Megalopolis, performed to music by Steve Reich and M.I.A., March 2 & 3 in the Eisenhower Theater. The company’s contemporary dance is said to sample “a variety of mediums and modern music, fuses art with entertainment, and puts theatrics front and center.” The program will also include Love Songs danced to the sounds of Aretha Franklin, Roy Orbison, and Nina Simone. Another piece, Mattress Suite, is a series of duets and trios is set to music by Vivaldi, Verdi, Bill Withers, and Mack Gordon/Harry Warren. In addition, Runaway, a fashion-inspired piece, called “showcases 12 dancers in 1960s wear moving down a runway of light.
Falun Dafa Association of Washington, D.C. will present Shen Yun: Reviving 5,000 Years of Civilization in the Kennedy Center Opera House, March 11-April 1. Shen Yun Performing Arts brings together over one hundred esteemed classically-trained dancers, choreographers, and musicians in what has been called “the world's premier classical Chinese dance and music company.” Their colorful new show will feature choreography ranging from grand imperial processions to legions of thunderous drums. The costumed dancers move in synchronized patterns amid spectacular visuals and music that combines "the best of the East and West." They incorporate “ancient legends of virtue and modern tales of courage."
The Kennedy Center will present Kabuki Dance by Bando Kotoji, led dance master Bando Kotoji on Friday, March 23 in the Terrace Theater. The program will feature the celebratory dance Manzai; the tragic dance titled Tamatori Ama (Pearl-Diving Woman), and Yoshino-yama (Yoshino Mountain), and an excerpt from the kabuki play Yoshitsune Senbon-zakura. The performances feature live music by four shamisen players, one chanter, and one percussionist and are performed in Japanese with English surtitles.
The Kennedy Center will present French dance company Ballet Preljocaj in the Eisenhower Theater, March 30-April 1. They will perform Snow White ("Blanche Neige"), which is a contemporary romantic ballet based on the popular Grimm Brothers tale and set to a selection of Mahler's symphonies.
