Strathmore will present a Tribute To Simon & Garfunkel and Paul Simon’s solo music, produced by Bandhouse Gigs, on Thursday, August 25 at the Music Center. More than 45 of the D.C. area’s top performers will participate in the salute, including Deanna Bogart, Julia Nixon, Deep River, Alan MacWen, Esther Haynes, Ed O’Connell, Chopteeth Afrofunk Big Band and Strathmore Artist in Residence alumni LEA, Margot MacDonald, Ted Garber, Victoria Vox, JP McDermott and The Sweater Set.
Free Summer Outdoor Concerts at Strathmore will be performed on select Wednesday evenings this summer, when music lovers can enjoy summertime serenades from the comfort of their beach chairs or picnic blankets. Ribs, pulled pork, veggie burgers, hot dogs, side dishes, desserts, soda, water, beer and wine will be available for purchase at the BBQ Shack. The series will include:

Friends of the National Zoo will have their first-ever Outdoor Concert Fundraiser on August 10. The music super-group the B-52s, who are known as the World’s Greatest Party Band, will headline the Rock’n’Roar concert. All proceeds from the concert will support animal care, conservation, science, education, and sustainability programs at the Zoo. Bob Lamb, executive director of FONZ, commented that “We know the B-52s will be a strong draw for the DC Metro area, and we hope to continue our exhilarating concert experience for many summers to come to further the Zoo’s outstanding conservation and outreach work.” The band performs a combination of rock’n’roll, funk and retro-hip music. Food and beverages will be available for purchase during the concert. Parking is free. The concert will be held rain or shine.

TriplePLAY presents a varied selection of modern piano literature, including solos, piano 4–hand, and 6-hand performances. The upcoming concert will feature the world premiere of three movements from “VERGE composer Jeffrey Mumford’s of ringing and layered space composed for each of VERGE’s pianists.” The concert will also include works by Washington composer Scott Pender, Canadian composer Andrew MacDonald, Stockhausen, Bermel, Kurtag, Cowell, and Bach. The National Gallery of Art's Jazz in the Garden Series is in progress in the Sculpture Garden, which is on the National Mall, west of the Gallery itself. WETA TV Channel 26 will air David Garrett: Rock Symphonies II on Friday, August 12 at 9 p.m. The performance by the violin virtuoso was taped before a sold-out audience of 18,000 at Berlin’s open-air Wuhlheide Theater. Garrett performs classical standards by Vivaldi, Brahms and Dvoˇrák, plus rock and pop hits.
Classical WETA 90.9 FM Radio will air the debut of The John E. Marlow Guitar Series on Front Row Washington on Monday, August 15 at 9 p.m. The concert will feature a recital by Trio Bolero which was recorded last January at Bethesda’s Westmoreland Congregational Church. The program includes works by Vivaldi, Rachmaninoff, Bartók, and Fauré. The guitar series was founded in 1993 in tribute to American University composer, performer and educator John Marlow (1939–1992), to enrich the musical life of residents of metropolitan Washington.
On Monday August 29 at 9 p.m., Front Row Washington will air The Fessenden Ensemble’s concert called “American Travels,” which was recorded at Washington’s National City Christian Church. The concert will feature works by Libby Larsen, John Corigliano and Samuel Barber.
